NGE (Noob's Galaxy Explorer) by Hefe
« on: 12-01-17, 18:18:34 »
Background:  Hefeweizen here, all around SWG Explorer... Back in LIVE I was mainly a pre-CU character on Starsider, started a couple of months after launch, stuck with it thru CU and early/buggy NGE after they killed my favorite professions (Ranger/Creature Handler) and made my 2-year Jedi grind pointless... So aside from a bit of floudering around in the Legacy Quests and checking back every couple years to visit my house/museum, I pretty much gave up on SWG.  I've spent the last 5 years or so dabbling in several of the pre-CU emulators to get my "SWG Fix" but when I saw the recent Stella Bellum announcements last month I decided to give NGE second try... and experience it in it's full glory instead of the painful SOE intial launch... with that in mind, this thread is an attempt to promote Stella Bellum's NGE from the perspective of a new user... whether that be no SWG background at all, or pre-NGE only...  Perhaps it will attract some curious new users... (but probably bore the average NGE vet to tears... apologies in advance... "These are not the posts you're looking for... Move along...")   ;)

Format will be something along the lines of...

Date/Location:  date of session / server, planets, cities, etc.

Journal:  quick summary of recent session events...

Observations:  brief observations...

1st Session (or so...) Tansarii / Gamma / Mos Eisley
« Reply #1 on: 12-01-17, 18:20:31 »
Date/Location:  ~4 Jan 2017, TC, working thru starter tutorials

Journal:  Created a quick human smuggler, no major changes there... forgot to click on the clothing reset so he landed on Tansarii(TPS) wearing a bathrobe(skirt)... fortunately the NPCs there die pretty quickly and carry around a lot of spare clothing... Tansarii was a nice re-introduction to the GUI interface... I pulled every quest I could find and wound up maxxing out at level 10 before finishing several of them... I think I got all of the ones on TPS and most of the ones on Gamma but only did the 1st Piloting mission to recall JTL for old time's sake... When Live is up and running I will have to revist so I can get the Badge I missed by not following the rest of the Piloting quests (Hero of Tansarii Station)... Left the station once the xp dried up and quests in the Journal were going grey... no point in sticking around for a test run on the TC... landed at Mos Eisley, did the basic quests to get the vehicle from Han Solo and called it a night...

Observations:
- New User: highly recommend going thru it for the easy credits, getting used to the interface, and your first 10 levels rather painless, keep in mind your xp will stop when you hit level 10 but you can keep getting cash/rewards for quests, or exploring as long as you want...
- Non-NGE User: play around with your interface till you find something that works for you... the toolbar only has 12 slots, but there are the usual 6 you can scroll thru... default creation didn't seem to have the map radar, coordinates bar, etc. but they showed up once I got to Tatooine so not sure if it's programmed that way, or I would have had to locate the right Option and checked a box somewhere... the "blue ribbon" (see Journal below) will get you where you need to go, so no big deal...
- Non-NGE User: loot(double click)/harvest(radial menu) quickly, the corpses seemed (to me) to be disappearing pretty quickly but it's a starter tutorial so they are probably programmed for quick respawns...
- Non-NGE User: a lot of the looted clothing items have buffs(increased % chance) to attributes you may not be familiar with like:  Agility, Constituion, Luck, Precision, Stamina & Strength... the SWG Wiki has details on which attributes affect what...
- Non-NGE User: looted junk items stack!  "Thank the Maker!"... Junk vendors are available on TPS to pay credits for all that stuff... is it just me or does every other thug drop a painting... I left with over 30 of them but they don't stack, so will have to wallpaper my first hovel with them...  :)
- Any User: Journal - check your Journal if you get lost with what you are supposed to be doing... or have several quests going at once... whichever quest you click on in the Journal becomes your active quest and the waypoint indicator (blue ribbon) will lead you in the active quest direction...
- Any User: Don't miss out on your first Collection (Dust Durnies)
- Any User: Don't miss out on your first Badge (Hero of Tansarii Point Station)

All in all a great re-introduction to my very first MMORPG, can't wait for it all to go LIVE!

Date/Location:  10-12 Jan 2017, TC, Tatooine, and several other planets briefly...

Journal:  Headed down to Mos Eisley since my xp gains were capped at level 10 and had done all but the Piloting quests and missed out on a Badge... will be sure to do them all on LIVE.  Had researched the Rattletrap ITV Collection online(instant travel vehicle) and wanted to grab one for myself since nothing like that existed in pre-CU times... There are plenty of references to it out on the Internet, no combat involved just visit 8 Starports on 4 planets and locate the parts which are all in the central ticketing lounge of the Starports below:
- Mos Eisley: no angry Jawas taking pot shots at me on the landing pad... good thing being level 10... picked up the parts and headed to Mos Espa...
- Mos Espa: picked up the parts and took a quick look outside, wanted to see if my old Mynock grinding spot was still there... it was, and they are all CL 18's... took a few shots at one and ran like hell when I realized I wasn't really doing much damage at all... I'll be back!!!  headed to Bestine...
- Bestine: just picked up the parts and headed to (I thought) Kaadara... but landed in Keren... too used to pre-CU where the default destination for Naboo is Kaadara instead of Theed as one might expect... I have learned to read the ticket terminal more closely...)  Forgot to check in on whether or not the Mayoral Race is still a quest in Bestine... will return later and see if Sean has any crappy statues or nice carpets to peddle...
- Kaadara: picked up the parts, did a quick check of the local Skaak Tippers (trash mobs) but here too, they are conning purple so hopped the next transport to Theed...
- Theed: this is the only station where the parts are in the actual hangar... cursor over all the crates, containers and boxes and you will find it... there were no trash mobs south of the shuttle port... heading to Coronet
- Coronet: another tricky ticket terminal... Coronet was always the default in pre-CU for Corellia, here the default is Kor Vella... luckily I saw it before I bought a ticket or I could have been Ragtag fodder... picked up the parts and did a quick fly-by check of the surrounding area (Meatlump trash mobs are way out of my level 10 league, lots of purple on the horizon... flew past them on my vehicle, checked out the usual urban sprawl that is South Coronet (no city though) and then back to the ITV Collection...) next stop Nashal on Talus...
- Nashal: picked up parts and ran... resisted the urge to check in on the Chunker Bunker... another favorite grinding spot as a low level... but they are probably taking the same vitamins as the Meatlumps so will save it for another time... heading for Dearic...
- Dearic: at first I thought my graphics were on the fritz when I landed, then realized it was SNOWING!!!  That one cracked me up!... it might rain in pre-CU, and Tatooine was famous for sandstorms, but I don't recall it ever snowing... ran to the last box of parts, completed the Collection and got the helpful system message that it was all mine, but I couldn't use it till I hit level 50... Live and learn!   :)

Deterred but not defeated, headed back to Mos Eisley to rejoin the Smuggler quests with Niko and Vourk... ran into Trehla (Helper NPC) and ran thru the first couple of her noob errands to get familiar with the Bank, Bazaar and Cloning Center... if I was brand new to SWG this would have been pretty helpful... and even learned a thing or two...  ;)

Observations:
- Forgot all about the change in CL for NPCs and wild spawns... was used to grinding pretty much anywhere around the classic starter locations (e.g. Coronet, Theed & Mos Eisley) and being relatively safe... now they are either deserted or too high a level... will have to delve back into the Legacy Quests, exterminate vermin around Mos Eisley and earn some levels.  I seem to recall hitting a couple of Valarian or Thranta NPC facilities during my brief foray into NGE back on LIVE as part of the Legacy quests... they were entertaining from what I recall.
- Old Dog/New Tricks - thanks to the Helper NPC I learned Banks don't require you to Join them anymore so hope that means I can hit my Safe Deposit from anywhere, Insurance Terminals have been shutdown and it now only costs 500cr to store your clone info.
- Starting to see glimpses of the GCW on the Planetary Maps, News Terminal, etc., adds some flavor and dimension to the overall gaming experience...
- Paintings are apparently so commonplace there are NPCs giving them away outside of the Mos Eisley Starport... maybe I can wallpaper my first hovel... (on Live, not TC... don't get too attached Hefe!)

Another nice session, sparked a few memories and showed me I need to focus on the Legacy Quests for a bit... or I am going to be spending a lot of time in the Cloning Centers... I also want to look up the nearest Collections NPC to start some more of those while I am out grinding Legacy anyhow...

Aslawk,

Will do what I can and try not to be a pre-CU snob...  ::)

SOE did not handle the original NGE launch very well at all, but I would still keep tabs on the SWG Wikis after I quit playing and think "Why the heck couldn't they have done some of this at launch (pre-CU or NGE for that matter)?" (Collections, Chronicles, GCW, Profession Quests, Legacy Quests, etc. or simply fix a lot of the annoying bugs and inconsistencies that were around from day 1?...)  Still love the game with all its faults, there hasn't (IMHO) been a better one since for all around player customization...

You don't need a collections npc to start on the collections.  Best way is to google them and see what you want to/can do from there

Thanx Zaydah,

I have several collections going right now just from the junk I have looted... I thought there might be a helper NPC in Mos Eisley because I thought the NPC that gave out the Dust Durni Collection quest(Tansarii) had some dialog to the effect "if you like collections, you should look up my friend in Mos Eisley..." but no waypoint or name was given... but it may have just been to immerse the player in the game, but not really a reference to an actual NPC planetside...

Yo dummy! The Safety is on... (explained below)
Date/Location:  12 Jan 2017, TC, Tatooine, Legacy and roaming around...

Journal:  Continuing Legacy (as a Smuggler) I tried a couple of the Thranta missions at level 11-12 but was having trouble once I got having to fend off 2 mobs at once in tight spaces... so took a break... Rode from Mos Eisley to Bestine (passing a player city (Skyfall?) along the way), I wanted to check out the Bestine Museum & Election quests. I enjoyed them on LIVE but the pre-CU servers haven't fully implemented them yet...  I pulled the Election mission, gathered my "evidence" and voted for Sean... he's a putz but I always liked that rug he handed out... before the Blue Rugs from the lootkits kicked in... I skipped the Museum quest since I haven't rolled a crafter yet so no need for the schematics.  Checked on Gerak, another NPC I remember from LIVE, he handed me 3-4 realtively easy quests, kill 10 worrts, kill 10 rill, etc. and then he screws you with having you go after a CL 18 Brigand for the final mission... just like he did in Live  :)

I managed to stumble over several more collections that I will have to research a bit... I liked the one for Pitch that started with clicking on an Askew Picture in the Bestine Capitol building... nice!  Ground a bit on the mobs around Mos Eisley and Bestine... managed to collect a lot of enzymes to complete the Beast Dye collection... if I ever adopt an Eopie I can paint him green... Noticing that I do a lot of inventory juggling, even with the Call Fence command... nothing much for sale on the bazaar/vendors so I finally broke down and "acquired" something from the Blue Frog... a small house deed.  I planted it north of Mos Espa and dumped a lot of junk there for safe keeping...

To break up some of the grind I decided to pull a couple of low level Destroy Missions from the terminals and was rewarded by the fine folks at COMPNOR with Bonus XP!!!  which was a nice surprise since the lair busting was taking forever... By this time I was well past CL 15-16 and decided to retry Thranta which went much better since there was another player (Jedi or Polearms, not sure which, it was a blur watching out for new spawns...) Managed to finish up there and headed out to Anchorhead (decided to play the Rebel side).  While I was in the area I passed thru Tosche Station, pulled a couple of quests that weren't too bad and managed my first Exploration Badge for the Lars Homestead (R.I.P. Uncle Owen/Aunt Beru)... I decided to try the CL 18 Brigand again and still too tough... plenty of incaps so far, but no clone trips... opened the system menu and noticed my email indicator was flickering... who's mailing me here in TC?  Turned out to be part of the Smuggler Profession quests... I was being offered a job to smuggle a package to a buyer way out in Mos Taike with a 12 minute time limit... I met the contact, paid 500cr front money and attempted to hop a shuttle to Mos Entha to put me closer but the "authorities" got wind of it and while they would let me waste credits on a ticket... they won't let me board (nice realism there, just like any real life government bureaucracy!)... hopped in my vehcile and made a bee line for Mos Taike, arriving with about 30 seconds to spare, and of course I got jumped by 2 bounty hunters right around my CL and couldn't get rid of them before they incapped me and the mission was aborted... That was fun! I had never received a quest via email before, it was a cool diversion...

Decided to see if I could get into any trouble in Mos Taike... the mayor (yep!, we're buddies) asked me to escort the galaxies SLOWEST surveyor from about 2500m away past Dragonets, Mutant Womprats, etc., all conning RED and about 5-10 levels above me... we had to zig zag our way thru... and he was so slow I was able to clean out my inventory by calling in the Fence whenever I would have to stop to wait on him... for my efforts I was rewarded a paltry 200cr (woot!).  Headed back out to try the CL 18 again, still no luck... by this time I am up to CL 17-18 myself, I just dont seem to be doing much damage (but I'm only using what I loot or get in rewards, no Blue Frog aside from the small house deed for storage). Wrapped up for the night...

Now for the "Safety" reference - hopped on the SWG Wiki for some research and immediately read something that would have been a big help a couple sessions ago... ALL SMUGGLER SPECIALS ARE FOR PISTOLS ONLY!!! and I've been using Carbines!... /handpalm... that's why I'm not seeing much in the way of damage... (on pre-CU trying to use a special for the wrong weapon fires off a message to remind you... or plain don't work!) I wondered what those faded red circles with "X"s on the toolbar were trying to tell me as I kept pew-pew-pewing targets and getting incapped a lot... can't wait to retry with practically any Pistol... now I'm sorry I just dumped a lot of the old weapon loots keeping only those with highest DPS and fastest speed, I now have mostly Carbs... dang!  At least I will be a bit wiser for Live (maybe?).

Observations:
- Pistols, Pistols, Pistols... don't assume just because you can use a command (and your gun fires) it is actually working without the right weapon in hand...
- Collections - these have gotten more interesting... enzymes turn into dye, crooked pictures will get me the pitch command, not sure what I will do with a Stage Smoke machine, but I'll think of something... can't wait to finish the Humerus Collectibles for that skeleton...
- Non-NGE User: it's kind of nice to see NPCs with a purpose... many of the ones I encounter in Mos Eisley and Bestine have a quest or two to offer... some are still the old pre-CU style, but most were eventually worked into the NGE mold showing the rewards up front, creating the stylized waypoint indicator and using the Commlink to save you having to drive all the way back to receive your prize (most of the time that is)...
- Non-NGE User: take some time and go thru all the options... I am slowly finding the ones I need to reset from default to make minor points in the game work again... (dragging an item over a container actually puts it inside, waypoint monitor on screen, newly created waypoints show up in monitor, etc... I'm getting there, it's a work in progress).
- Non-NGE User: look up COMPNOR on the SWG Wiki... if you are grinding levels and want a break from Legacy... the bonus is a percentage of the xp you need for you current level (usually ~8-10%), and they let you repeat it several times a day... up to a certain level, so you could earn a lot of xp by pulling missions...
- Non-NGE User: a quick look at the Bazaar interface looks like there a lot of new search options and filters(compared to pre-CU)... but being a TC server, there is rarely anything for sale out there so didn't spend a lot of time with it...

- Next moves:  Get a pistol dummy!  Quickly visit some more planets for the Pitch Collection and maybe some more POI Badges, read up on Chronicler... piling up dozens of Relics... retry the CL 18 Brigand, the smuggling run to Mos Taike and some more COMPNOR sponsored missions so I can revisit my old stomping grounds (Corellia/Talus) and not get owned by Meatlumps and Sleemos because I will be CL 20 soon and have a real weapon for specials...

Sorry for the rambling but it's like a whole new game for some of us!   ;D

Hefe's Saga Continues...
Coming up on level 20... slowly figuring things out... have been hitting more Collections on Tatooine, getting some Badges and starting some of the Jabba Theme park quests...

Observations (of an NGE Dummy)
*Pistols are making a big difference(duh!)... looted some Retrofitted CDEFs that are helping with speed and DPS... good enough for TC.
*Figuring out specials... they are now doing some nice damage... but think I need a keymap correction, more details below...
*Getting hooked on Collections, but then I was more of an Explorer/Loot-whore than anything else in LIVE, so no surprise there...
*Starting to get a little Contraband in my looting... haven't hit the amounts they want yet... will be interested to see where that goes...
*Finally cloned during the Jabba quests, wound up in Wayfar... waiting out the Clone Sickness (no wounding anymore)... its all about buffs and debuffs... (as I learned at the Sarlacc pit!).  I need to start carrying some Stims or something... the basic Smuggler heal isn't cutting it when I get swamped...
*Collector NPC - you don't need to visit an NPC for Collections but there is one in Mos Eisley that will get you started on some simple ones and then lead you to some additional ones and some other Collector NPCs on other planets... you can find waypoints on line, I don't want to give stuff away... if you are familiar with Mos Eisley, head for the Taverns (not Cantina) and you can't miss her under a canopy...
*Isomerase is my least favorite lootable (so far)... will have to research incubators to play with that I guess... nearly every critter drops the stuff... now I destroy anything under 10% and still have way too much of the stuff...
*LIFE DAY - looks much improved... there is a tree growing in Wayfar and I get to run to Keren to check on a candy delivery and may earn a Fruitcake or glass of Nog for my efforts... sign me up! (think the tree is responsible for the strange weather in Wayfar)...

Toolbar:  Can anybody recommend Option settings for the toolbar?  It's taken me a bit but have finally figured out that for my default setup I have to left click (select the Special I want to use next) and then right click on the targeted mob to fire it... is that the way most are operating?  Seems like a lot of unnecessary mouse clicking... if I've already tab selected a target... is there a setting in Options or Keymap to simply make the toolbar an attack toolbar (click there and fire) or is the NGE essentially an FPS so part of the combat challenge is moving and keeping a visual bead on your target?  Either way if fine... just wondering if the default settings are slowing me down but since I never did much NGE back in LIVE, never paid much attention to getting my settings more efficient... any suggestions much appreciated on this one... but I'm enjoying discovering all the content related stuff, and using the wiki for details when needed...

So far... the "snow and wintry mix" we were supposed to get in Maryland has been a bust... but it is snowing here in the sands of Tatooine... (couldn't figure out how to attach the screen shot...)

The toolbar should automatically be made available for you to hit your keyboard (eg. 1, 2, 3, etc.) and make the attack.

As long as you have your target selected (Mouse click or Tab to it) and have the toolbar set up with your commands, you should be able to press the number and/or sign corresponding to that command and it will execute it.

Otherwise, I'm enjoying the read. You should make a blog about it. :P

Cool.  Glad you're enjoying it.  I've ground out too many nge characters to do it for fun on TC.  The frog beckons me!  All hail the hypno-toad!

What aiming setup are you using?  Auto-aim and firing specials from the keyboard or mouse-pointer aim and right-click?

Thanks for the suggestions Akask and JekVanno... I like to handle movement with the mouse so I have the option set to move holding down both left and right... in pre-CU I never used the keyboard for much besides chat... since all of the toolbar keys were mouse clickable or I could hit the F1-F12 keys... sounds like I stumbled onto mouse-pointer / right click (must be the default) since the only way to get it to work consistently is to left click a button to select the special, then right click the target mob to fire the special... I may have to give Auto-aim / firing specials a try and see if I like that better... thanks again...

Glad the thread isn't too dull (so far)... I'm pretty much just exploring old haunts right now... don't want to get too attached to anything till LIVE comes along.... usually be this point on the emus I would have rolled half a dozen characters and over extended my real estate empire with too many buildings to comfortably afford...  ;-)

Y key is the default to toggle auto aim.  In keymap, iirc, you can click the checkbox for "actions can be fired from toolbar".  Tab to target and you're good to go.  Toggle auto-attack is also good so you don't have to lean on that mouse button to keep firing.  I remapped mouse button 2 to "set intended target", so I can tab or pick and choose.

It'll be interesting to journal the expansion of the game when Live hits.

Do you have any modifications installed or changed the options settings? Keymapper has a "Load a Standard Keymap" option.

Getting sloppy... and having fun!
Date/Location:  14 Jan 2017/All over Tatooine and beyond...

Journal:  Now that I have a better idea of combat mechanics (thanks to all who showed me which gun, which way to point the gun, etc.) things are rolling around to the point where just like in LIVE, I have so many quests and mini-Projects going on I'm losing track... but in SWG that's a good thing!

Continuing in Wayfar I managed to get into the following trouble:
*Did the first round of Jabba's quests for Reelo... lost my first vehicle to some nasty Valarians, but somewhere along the way somebody rewarded me with a second one... so don't have to hitchhike just yet... noticed a few new faces in Jabba's Lobby... can't wait to find out what they do...
*Found a Life Day quest giver under the big tree (that snows...) he sent me off on a quest to find some missing holiday candy in Keren... will file that one away for now...
*Did the mini quest line for Rakir to get the much coveted Shellfish Harvesting Tool (coveted if you grew up in New England and need your periodic Lobster Buff...
*Collections:  very addictive to us loot-whores!  I have about a dozen going now... have finished several including the basic ones (Comlink, Datapad, Rattletrap, Force-Shui(Pitch), Beast Dye, etc.)... Can't pass a Rill or Womprat without veering off course to squash it... got to get those numbers up!  I think I like the way they took the gathering of POI Badges and split them into various collections of exploration... have a couple of them started as I have hit most of the POIs on Tatooine and a handful on Corellia.
Somewhere around CL 21-22 I realized I should get back to the Smuggler quests before they all start becoming grey to me in the Journal... decided to use the Jabba Comlink and get some jobs from Bib Fortuna... those have been mostly chasing down clues so far, but it's been some interesting content... (murder case, gathering clues, etc.)
*Decided to finish that CL 18 Brigand now that I'm pointing the Pistol the right way... he didn't stand a chance but it took forever becasue now that I can survive pretty well (and need more Bones for my Skeleton Collection!) I blast pretty much every wild lair I see... that was how I had my second vehicle Disabled... by a Lesser Swarming Dewback no less!  The vehicles are more easily disabled and the NPC/mobs are more aggressive than I recall... and that's how I got to walk/run ~4000m to kill the Brigand, and walk/run ~4000m back to Gerkak to turn in the quest... Treated myself to a Blue Frog Speederbike...
*Finished up the night halfway thru CL 23... (loving the free Armor award at CL 22... I am now Noob-vincible, and even sloppier with combat than ever!)... between the questing and the basic exploration collections I have hit all but Lok, Mustafar and Kash...

Observations:
   * Vehicles are much more perishable/mobs are more prone to attack them... will have to carry spares when this goes LIVE.
   * Lairs clear faster, they don't go thru the wave-system like in pre-CU (initial wave, 10% damage wave, 50% damage wave), it's pretty much initial and then trickling out as you damage the lair... which is fine with me... adjusting strategies keeps it interesting... they also seem to stop chasing you sooner, and get back to full health immediately after breaking off combat...
   * NPCs like to flank... forgot how they had changed that!  Keeps it interesting when two mobs are attacking and one runs past you to get behind and then you are in their crossfire...

Up Next? - I need to check the Journal and tie up a lot of loose ends... then I may reward myself with a Blue Frog Guild Hall to start stashing my "treasures"!

Sorry about the plain format... not sure why but when I post at work the formatting buttons, smileys, etc. work as expected... when I do the same at home they don't...
